Need for indigenisation of teacher education system: NCTE chief

Bengaluru: As part of the government's effort to garner opinions for drafting a new education policy, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) on Saturday held a consultation here that saw participation from across the southern region.

Various aspects related to teacher education that needed to be revamped were discussed, a Deccan Herald report said.

NCTE chairperson Santosh Panda said that there was a need to shut down teacher education institutions with poor enrollment.

He also said that there was a need for indigenisation of teacher education system. There was a need to combine western models of education with indigenous methods, he said.

Issues like transparency in regulation and accreditation process, drafting of a teacher education curriculum, yoga education, information and communication technology were discussed at the meet. The participants also proposed a national teacher education qualification framework, according to the report.

The NCTE meeting comes in the wake of Union HRD minisitry's initiative to come up with a revised national education policy. The first such policy was framed in 1968.
